Module Objectives
This module introduces cognitive engagement and supports teachers in building the skills necessary to engage students. Estimated time to complete: 45-60 minutes
This module is related to NEE Indicator 1.2.
Activities in this module will examine the research concerning student cognitive engagement and the strategies teachers use to cognitively engage their students. At the end of this module, participants will be able to:

select and use appropriate strategies for cognitive engagement

utilize the selected strategies in ways that are effective in achieving cognitive engagement

use specific processing strategies with students

ensure all or almost all of the students are cognitively engaged with the content
-
achieve cognitive engagement for all or almost all of the class period

recognize when students are not cognitively engaged and altering the strategies to remedy the situation

support students in monitoring their own level of cognitive engagement

help students develop personal strategies to maintain cognitive engagement during class
