Trauma-Informed Schools

Module Objectives

Schools that are trauma-informed take steps to ensure that teachers are aware of and sensitive to the potential effects that trauma can have on students. The goal is to provide a safe, stable and understanding environment for students and staff. Estimated time to complete: 45-60 minutes.

This module is related to NEE Indicator 2.4

At the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the signs that can indicate a student is suffering from trauma

  2. Identify the effects trauma can have on behavior and learning

  3. Explain the connections between trauma and the developing brain

  4. List some classroom strategies teachers can use to support students who are suffering the effects of trauma

  5. Explain the steps schools should take to become trauma informed

  6. Describe how trauma-informed schools may operate differently from traditional schools

  7. Define STS (secondary traumatic stress) and list some ways to combat it
