Module Objectives

Questions are the most common form of interaction between teachers and students. The activities in this module will explore the effective use of questioning in the classroom. Estimated time to complete: 60-90 minutes.

At the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the characteristics of effective questioning

  2. Examine the connection between effective questioning and student learning

  3. Describe different types of questions

  4. Provide techniques to support the asking of higher-level questions

  5. Define Socratic questioning and explain how to use it

  6. Explain essential questions and questions of import

  7. Plan lessons that include appropriate questioning strategies

  8. Use questioning strategies effectively to support student learning
